Western style futons are based on a Japanese futons which are thick mattresses used as beds. In a small room like this, they may be used primarily as a comfy way to watch TV or hang out with friends. The use of them as a bed is always available if the need for a sleeping spot arises unexpectedly.

Another reason they make great beds is their comfortable to sleep on even when they are closed. While they open up to about a full size bed, when closed they are like a twin size bed. Sleeping on the couch is not always comfortable but sleeping on a closed futon actually is.

Futons generally come in 3 styles. The bi-fold basically looks like a bench when put together. Bi-folds will come with armrests. The tri-fold also looks like a bench but has another panel folded behind the 'back' of the bench. This style can come with or without armrests.

Futons are less expensive than whole bed sets and living room couches. Most department stores and furniture stores will have them in stock or you can buy online. Frames are easy to put together and once assembled they are not difficult to move. A futon mattress is fairly heavy and because it is so flexible, it is flimsy which makes it hard to carry.
